چکیده

We have conducted pulling and bending tests on individual carbon nanotubes in-situ in a transition electron microscope. Based on our observation of the force required to break the tube, a tensile strength of 0.15 TPa was computed. From corresponding bending studies on such nanotubes, the Young’s modulus was estimated to be 0.9 TPa (0.8 TPa after ‘sub continuum’ corrections). These results suggest a strength that is a large fraction of the elastic modulus, although previous measurements of their elastic stiffness have yielded higher modulus values, by as much as a factor of 2. The result does indicate that individual nanotubes can fail as essentially defect-free materials. Furthermore, we observed no obvious reduction in cross-sectional area prior to the failure. In addition, the bending experiments revealed a remarkable flexibility in these tubes. These unique properties support the potential of nanotubes as reinforcement fibers in structural materials. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Superior electrical and mechanical characteristics observed through the incorporation of coiled carbon nanotubes, in comparison to non-coiled forms, in polymers

It is shown that the addition of coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNTs), to polymer matrices confers a two-fold increase of the relative electrical permittivity, in addition to an improvement in the mechanical characteristics. A four-fold augmentation of the elastic modulus and a two-fold improvement in the ultimate tensile strength (compared to the polymer) at w2 vol% filler fractions was also obtain...

Nonlinear Vibration Analysis of Embedded Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes in Thermal Environment

In this article, based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the large-amplitude vibration of multiwalled carbon nanotubes embedded in an elastic medium is investigated. The method of incremental harmonic balance is implemented to solve the set of governing nonlinear equations coupled via the van der Waals (vdW) interlayer force. The influences of number of tube walls, the elastic medium, nanotub...

Statistical analysis of the parameters influencing the mechanical properties of layered MWCNTs/PVC nanocomposites

In this paper, a new method is proposed for the production of MWCNTs/PVC (multi-walled carbon nanotubes/ polyvinyl chloride) nanocomposites. In this method, a spray is used to produce layers of carbon nanotubes within a PVC matrix. Various parameters influence the production of the nanocomposite and its mechanical properties. These parameters are studied separately and the effect of each of par...
